Telford celebrates winning a record six Green Flag awards

Visit Telford is delighted to announce the achievement of winning six Green Flag awards for the towns parks and green spaces. These awards recognise the outstanding efforts of the teams responsible for maintaining these green spaces and ensuring they remain enjoyable for all.

This year, Telford and Wrekin retained its existing four Green Flags for Telford Town Park, Hartshill Park, Dawley Park, and Dale End Park. Additionally, two more sites, Bowring Park and Apley Woods Local Nature Reserve, received Green Flag status for the first time.

These six award-winning parks are under the care and management of Telford & Wrekin Council, with invaluable support from local volunteer groups.

The Green Flag judges were equally impressed with Telford's two newest Green Flag sites. Bowring Park was described as an excellent and well-maintained local park which is evidently well-used and enjoyed by the community. Apley Woods received praise as an excellent local nature reserve, clearly being managed well by the council with support from the friends group—a superb asset for the local community.

Cllr Carolyn Healy (Lab), Telford & Wrekin Council cabinet member for climate action, green spaces, heritage, and leisure, expressed her enthusiasm for this achievement. She mentioned that to rack up six Green Flag-winning parks for Telford and Wrekin is absolutely fantastic news and a real testament to all the hard work that council teams put in, with the invaluable support of volunteers from the many 'Friends' groups who help keep these spaces looking attractive.

She continued by mentioning that over the last couple of years, they've invested in enhancing both Bowring Park and Apley Woods as part of their On Your Side funding program. By working closely with their community, they're delivering even better parks for their residents.

Telford Town Park, the first of the borough's parks to receive a Green Flag award in 2015, has consistently maintained its status. This recognition is important for tourism—it helps attract people from outside the borough to come to the park and enjoy all its facilities.

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under license from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing, and Communities, sets the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
