2025 marks 80 years since the end of the Second World War and Victory in Europe (VE) Day – a time when communities came together to celebrate peace, honour those who served, and look to the future with hope.

To commemorate this milestone anniversary, communities across Telford and Wrekin are planning a wide range of events and activities thanks to a dedicated grant fund from Telford & Wrekin Council. From street parties and beacon lightings to exhibitions, lunches and legacy projects, there’s something for everyone to get involved in. Below is a round-up of confirmed events taking place across the Borough:
Council-led commemorations:

  • Flag raising ceremony – Thursday 8 May, 8.45am
    A parade of the VE Day 80 flag followed by a flag-raising at 9am. Performances by Telford Sings and Thomas Telford School Choir.

  • Veteran’s Hub art exhibition – Southwater
    Featuring artwork and contributions from local veterans and school children, including pieces from the Imperial War Museum’s ‘Letters to Loved Ones’ project.

  • Church Bell ringing – Thursday 8 May, 6.30pm
    Churches across the borough will join the national “Ringing Out In Celebration of Peace”.

  • Beacon lighting – Thursday 8 May, 9.30pm
    Southwater One will be illuminated as part of the national tribute.

  • Great Dawley Street Party – Dawley High Street, Saturday 10 May, 11am–3pm

  • Armed Forces Community Café and Beacon lighting – Dawley House, Thursday 8 May

  • Celebration for 65+ residents – Arleston Community Centre, Saturday 10 May

Oakengates:

  • VE Day Picnic in the Park – Hartshill Park, Saturday 10 May, 11am–3pm
    Includes live music, games, face painting and charitable stalls.

Newport:

  • Beacon lighting – St Nicholas Church, Thursday 8 May, 9.30pm

  • Street party – High Street, Saturday 10 May, 10am–2pm

Madeley:

  • Community Day – The Anstice, Saturday 10 May

  • Memorial bench opening – Meeting Point House green space, Thursday 8 May, 11am–1pm

Hollinswood:

  • May Day and VE Day celebrations – Hollinswood Local Centre, Saturday 3 May, 12pm–4pm

PODS (Parents Opening Doors) Hub – Central Park, Telford:

  • Blossom and Bloom Tea Party – Tuesday 6 May, 10am–11.30am

  • Crafts for Carers – Thursday 8 May, 10am–11.30am

  • Family Fish and Chip Bingo – Thursday 8 May, 6pm–7.30pm

  • Cake Decorating – Friday 9 May, 10am–11.30am

  • Craft and Tea Party – Saturday 10 May, 11am–1pm

Culturekind Chinese Community – VE Day 80 Celebration:

‘From War to Peace and Unity’ – Saturday 10 May, E4 Stafford Park 15, Telford. A day of remembrance and celebration focused on shared stories and future unity.
