Hoo Zoo and Dinosaur World has opened its brand-new Homegrown Heroes attraction, celebrating the incredible species that call the UK home. The attraction’s latest development shines a spotlight on the zoo’s own native residents, from the smallest insects to elusive mammals, including the zoo’s resident badgers. The new area has been designed to encourage visitors to discover the wonders that live right on their doorstep and taking meaningful actions to protect native species facing threats to their habitats.

The new zone features over thirty specially-installed bird boxes and insect houses, providing safe havens for a wide range of local wildlife. Guests can explore interactive displays highlighting native birds such as robins, woodpeckers, and tawny owls, as well as wild mammals including badgers, hedgehogs, and foxes. The area also focuses on the vital role of insects in the ecosystem, particularly native dung beetles, a species that plays a crucial part in maintaining healthy habitats.

Will Dorrell, Owner at Hoo Zoo and Dinosaur World said “It’s easy to think of wildlife as something exotic or far away, but some of our most fascinating creatures are right here in Shropshire. Homegrown Heroes is all about celebrating the species that share our homes, gardens and countryside. We’re especially excited about the dung beetle colonies that have been discoverd on site, they might not be the most glamorous of animals, but they’re absolutely essential for the environment. By installing new bird boxes and insect houses, we hope to give our native species a real boost while inspiring visitors to protect wildlife in their own back gardens.”

The Homegrown Heroes area is included with standard zoo admission and is suitable for all ages. It’s part of Hoo Zoo’s ongoing commitment to conservation and education, offering an engaging way for families to learn more about the incredible biodiversity of the UK.
