Watch the solar eclipse in a beautiful Shropshire flower field

Visitors to Shropshire Petal Fields can enjoy a rare combination of colourful blooms and a remarkable celestial event during a special evening opening on Wednesday 12 August.

The popular attraction near Newport has announced extended opening hours from 5pm to 8pm, giving visitors the chance to experience a partial solar eclipse while exploring fields filled with delphiniums, sunflowers and wildflowers.

The eclipse is expected to begin at around 6.15pm, reaching its maximum shortly after 7pm. Around 90 to 96 per cent of the sun is forecast to be covered by the moon, making it one of the most significant solar eclipses visible from the UK in recent years.

Beth Heath, Director of Shropshire Festivals, said: "Enjoy a special moment in the skies from our field of delphiniums, sunflowers, and wildflowers.

"Having a gentle stroll in the beautiful layers of colour transports you from everyday stresses, helping you connect with nature.

"Don’t forget your solar viewing glasses; we’ll have a limited supply available for purchase at the event too."

Visitors are reminded not to look directly at the sun without approved solar viewing glasses, in line with guidance from the Royal Astronomical Society.

Shropshire Petal Fields opened for the 2026 season on 7 August and welcomed more than 3,000 visitors during its first three event days.

Remaining open dates for the 2026 season are 12, 14, 15 and 16 August. An additional sunset opening will take place on 14 August, with evening sessions running from 5.30pm to 9.30pm.

Dogs are welcome on 12, 15 and 16 August.

Despite a challenging growing season, the flower fields continue to provide a vibrant setting for visitors seeking seasonal colour, photography opportunities and time spent outdoors.
