About

Discover how the Romans lived 2000 years ago at Wroxeter -  once the forth largest city in Roman Britain with up to 5000 citizens. Eventually covering some 180 acres, it was equal in size to Pompeii in Italy.

Wroxeter began as a legionary fortress and developed into a thriving civilian city, populated by traders and retired soldiers. Today its ruins stand in open fields. The most impressive features are the remains of the 2nd-century municipal baths and the huge wall dividing them from the excercise hall, once in the heart of the city.

The audio tour describes how Wroxeter worked in its heyday, and you can explore a wealth of site-finds in the fascinating museum. The military weapons and equipment, fashion accessories and medical instruments reveal details of the citixens every day life. Trace the city's rise, flourishing, post-Roman survival and eventual abandonment through the vivid interpretation.

Don't miss the on-site recreation of a Roman townhouse, complete with painted rooms including dining room, bedroom, and bath-suite and replicas of Roman furniture. Inspired by houses excavated here, it was built using traditional methods as interpreted by six modern builders for the Chanel 4 series Rome Wasn't Built in a Day.
