About
Originating from Japan, raku firing is an exciting and unpredictable ceramic technique that has been used for centuries. In this hands-on workshop, participants will decorate a bisque-fired pot using specialist raku glazes and oxides before firing. The pots are drawn from the kiln at around 1,000°C and placed into combustible materials, creating a reduction atmosphere that blackens and cracks the surface. The result is a completely unique decoration on each piece.
This workshop offers a rare opportunity to experience the dramatic raku process first-hand, combining traditional techniques with creative expression. It is ideal for those with an interest in ceramics, Japanese culture, or experimental art forms.
The session also explores the influence of Japanese design in the UK and Europe, which began in the late nineteenth century as Japan opened up to the West. This sparked a wave of Japanese-inspired ceramic and tile designs, examples of which can be seen at Coalport China Museum and Jackfield Tile Museum.
No prior experience is necessary, and all materials will be provided. Participants will leave with a one-of-a-kind ceramic piece and a deeper appreciation for this historic and artistic firing method.
